Spelljammer 2e: Core Books, Optional Rules and Campaign Boxes
ยท TSR Archive
Start with Adventures in Space, then choose a ship-combat supplement or a campaign location. See what War Captain's Companion and the other boxes add.
Start a classic Spelljammer campaign with AD&D 2e core rules and Adventures in Space. Then choose supplements by their job. War Captain's Companion expands ship combat; Rock of Bral provides a location; The Legend of Spelljammer explores the great vessel. A large box is not automatically a replacement for the original setting rules.
The starting books and the optional branches
Adventures in Space, TSR 1049, contains the Lorebook of the Void and Concordance of Arcane Space, both 96-page books. Its publisher description identifies space travel, ships, spells and creatures among the setting material. Those rules sit alongside the PHB, DMG and a monster reference for ordinary AD&D play.
| Product | What it adds | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| War Captain's Companion TSR 1072 | Expanded ship information, construction material and ship-combat rules. | Ship battles and fleet preparation are recurring parts of the campaign. |
| The Complete Spacefarer's Handbook CGR1, TSR 2130 | Character options, kits, proficiencies and equipment. | Players want approved options tailored to spacefaring. |
| Rock of Bral SJR5, TSR 9361 | A developed asteroid-city base. | The party needs a home port with local people and adventure material. |
| The Legend of Spelljammer TSR 1065 | A setting and adventures aboard the enormous Spelljammer. | The great ship itself is central to the campaign. |
| The Astromundi Cluster TSR 1087 | A detailed sphere with factions, locations and additional material. | You want that specific regional campaign setting. |
The distinction is supported by the original product descriptions in the linked archive cards.
The Legend of Spelljammer explicitly identifies the original Adventures in Space box as its companion setting. War Captain's Companion describes itself as a sequel and expansion. Neither label makes the original rules dispensable.
Treat War Captain's Companion as a rules choice
The Companion contains War Captain's Guide, Ship Recognition Manual and Combat Among the Stars. Its description identifies optional three-dimensional movement and advanced equipment within the expanded ship-combat material. You can therefore choose a more detailed combat treatment without assuming every campaign must use all of it. Before introducing it, record which ship-combat procedure the group will follow. Check the selected ship's statistics against that procedure and keep the relevant reference near its deck plan. Mixing a ship entry from one treatment with an unstated resolution system from another leaves the DM to repair assumptions during combat.
For a campaign focused on boarding and character encounters, begin with the procedure you already understand and add detail when it has a clear purpose. A box full of fleet references is useful for that job, but is not required simply because the characters travel aboard a ship.
A core book is not the whole original package
The 1989 box also provides four maps, ship deck-plan sheets and stand-up pieces. Its archive record includes component codes and descriptions. If you are buying a partial original, check which of those aids remain with the two rulebooks.
Missing counters are easier to substitute than missing rules: labeled tokens can represent ships, and a suitable grid can provide a play surface. Missing deck plans may require more preparation for boarding scenes. List the specific aids you need for the first session, then inspect the offered copy against that list.
A scan or bound reprint is another presentation of the material. Do not assume its listing reproduces every loose object at original size. The Planescape format comparison shows why a box's contents list and a reprint's physical construction need separate checks.
Build a campaign shelf in an order you can use
- Choose the original AD&D 2e rules framework and read the core Spelljammer travel material.
- Prepare one ship and a starting location. Rock of Bral is an option for the latter, rather than a mandatory first purchase.
- Approve the character options available to players. A Spacefarer's Handbook on the shelf does not approve every kit automatically.
- Add a regional box or the Companion when its material becomes part of the campaign's plans. Keep new rules decisions written beside the existing ones.
Modern products also use the title Adventures in Space. Check the edition and product identity: this guide's core box is TSR 1049 from 1989. A shared title does not establish mechanical compatibility.
Sources and scope
Primary publisher descriptions and original component inventories are preserved in the six linked TSR Archive records. This is a library-role guide for AD&D 2e, not a chapter-by-chapter comparison of every later ship rule.
