Planescape 1994 vs Print on Demand: Maps, Screen and Booklets
ยท TSR Archive
The 1994 box supplies 4 separate booklets and a standing screen. Compare the original loose components with reported POD construction before buying.
A Planescape reprint can give you the setting text without reproducing the way the 1994 box works at the table.
The original separates four booklets from a DM screen and four double-sided poster maps. For a buying decision, compare those objects with the specific print-on-demand format, rather than treating every edition of the same title as the same package.
What the original box lets you separate
The TSR 2600 archive record identifies the original campaign setting. The Acaeum's component list and Wayne's Books' photographed set provide independent ways to inspect its contents.
| Piece | Original form | Why the separate object matters |
|---|---|---|
| Sigil and Beyond | 96-page booklet | The DM can keep the location reference open while consulting another book. |
| A DM's Guide to the Planes | 64-page booklet | Rules and DM information remain separate from the player guide. |
| A Player's Guide to the Planes | 32-page booklet | You can hand this booklet to players without handing over the whole setting. |
| Monstrous Supplement | 32-page booklet | Creature lookups do not compete for the same open spread as setting text. |
| DM screen | Four-panel fold-out screen | Reference tables stand upright and conceal DM notes. |
| Maps and reference sheets | Four double-sided posters | The group can share a large surface while the books stay open. |
The map subjects include Sigil, the Outlands and the Outer Planes, with faction symbols and reference material on the other sheets or reverse sides. Four double-sided posters means four physical sheets, not eight separate maps. Check both sides in a used copy's photographs.
What the reported POD format changes
A 2025 owner report describes the campaign-setting hardcover POD as a combined volume, with oversized material printed on ordinary pages at the back. That report does not describe a newly produced box with loose posters. It is evidence about that copy and format, rather than a guarantee about every future printing option. A page-sized map preserves some information while changing how you use it. Small place names can become harder to consult from across the table. Two references that could lie side by side in separate booklets now compete for one binding. Screen artwork reproduced as pages would likewise be different from a standing screen.
Those differences do not make a reading copy unusable. They mean that a campaign may need its own table map and reference sheets. Treat preparation of those aids as part of the format decision, especially if you expect to give players the guide while reading the DM material.
Four questions to resolve before ordering
- Which product and format are selected? The licensed product page is the place to check the current offer. A PDF selection and a printed-book selection are different purchases.
- Are oversized sheets separate, fold-out or bound at ordinary page size? Ask for a photograph when buying an existing copy.
- Is there a physical standing screen? A contents listing inherited from the original box does not settle how that screen appears in a reprint.
- Can you read the map labels and inner margins in the offered copy? Review an actual spread, rather than judging color or alignment from a cover image.
The live storefront did not expose a reliable current format specification during this check on . The comparison therefore uses the identified owner report for POD construction. It makes no claim about current prices, stock or a universal printing defect.
A reading copy or a complete box?
Choose a reading reprint when access to the text is the job and you are prepared to make your own play aids. Choose an original box when the separate booklets, poster scale and screen are part of what you want. An incomplete original may satisfy the first job while failing the second.
For a used original, make a component checklist from the archive and request one photograph showing all four booklets, the screen and the four sheets. A good-looking box lid cannot establish completeness. Later Planescape boxes are separate products; their contents should not be used to fill this checklist by title alone.
