Van Richten's Compendiums: Which Guides Are in Each Volume?
Editorial date: ยท TSR Archive
Map the guides across three Monster Hunter compendiums. Volume Three adds the previously unpublished Witches text; a volume number selects the right book.
The three Van Richten's Monster Hunter's Compendium volumes collect different guides. Volume One covers vampires, werebeasts and the Created. Volume Two covers ghosts, liches and the Ancient Dead. Volume Three adds fiends and the Vistani, plus a Guide to Witches that its product description identifies as previously unpublished. That last distinction matters if you already own the standalone guides. The third compilation has a reason to be checked beyond replacing books on your shelf. Use the subject map below to find the volume you need, then inspect the relevant text for the version of a rule you intend to use.
Which guide is in which volume?
| Compilation | Guides named in its description | Identity | What to check on your shelf |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volume One | Vampires; Werebeasts; the Created. | TSR 11447, 1999, 288 pages. | These subjects belong together here, despite their different standalone publication dates. |
| Volume Two | Ghosts; the Lich; the Ancient Dead. | TSR 11507, 1999, 288 pages. | A vampire guide is not part of this volume's listed contents. |
| Volume Three | Fiends; the Vistani; Witches. | TSR 11613, 2000, 288 pages. | The description distinguishes the previously unpublished Witches guide from the other two. |
The product descriptions call the collected texts complete and updated. Treat "updated" as a reason to compare the rule you use, rather than evidence that the compilation is a facsimile of an earlier book. This article has not verified every alteration or established an errata list.
Make a subject checklist before buying duplicates
Suppose you own Van Richten's Guide to Vampires and want material on ghosts. Volume Two addresses that new subject; buying Volume One for its vampire title would not close the stated gap. Conversely, if your immediate need is the Created, Volume One is the relevant compilation to inspect.
A collection of the older standalone books can be extensive without containing the Witches text. The third volume's description gives it a different publication status. Do not invent an earlier separate TSR release to make the set look symmetrical.
Keep a simple ledger with one row per subject and columns for standalone copy, compilation copy and preferred rules version. If you use a rule from a compilation, cite its own page in your notes. Page references from an old adventure or article may point into the standalone guide instead.
These are monster-hunting references, not the Ravenloft core box
Owning the three compilations does not establish that you own a campaign map, the setting's core procedures or a Tarokka deck. Those are separate purchasing questions. Our Ravenloft setting-book comparison maps the black box, red box, Forbidden Lore and Domains of Dread.
The compendium descriptions say the material is usable in AD&D campaigns beyond Ravenloft. That permits a DM to consult a guide for a monster elsewhere. It does not certify the rules as ready for a later D&D edition. If you adapt an encounter, identify its base creature statistics and review the guide's additions against the rules your group actually uses.
Also distinguish the book's fictional narrator from the article's evidence. Van Richten's in-world experiences are part of the writing. They are not a claim that this archive's editors have tested every monster at a game table.
Inspect the offered volume
Request a photograph of the full title, contents page and binding. A listing shortened to "Van Richten Compendium" can omit the one piece of information that selects the right book: its volume number. A cover photograph is helpful, but a contents photograph confirms the subjects directly.
For a digital edition or a modern physical reprint, check its own format description. The archive's 288-page records describe the original publications. They do not guarantee current paper stock, binding or scan quality.
Sources and scope
The three linked compendium records supply the subject groups, dates, product numbers and stated update status. Standalone records identify the older books. This is a coverage and purchase guide, not a passage-level comparison, monster conversion or review of a current reprint.
