Rules Cyclopedia and Wrath of the Immortals: Choose a Rules Framework

Editorial date: ยท TSR Archive

Wrath's 36-level Immortal framework revises earlier rules. Keep its stated precedence separate from the Cyclopedia's Basic-through-Master mortal reference.

The Rules Cyclopedia covers the Basic, Expert, Companion and Master rules, including mortal character advancement through level 36. That does not make it a complete replacement for the separate Immortals rules. For Immortal characters, choose between the earlier Set 5: Immortals Rules and the revised framework in Wrath of the Immortals. When using Wrath, its Codex of the Immortals introduction gives the revised rules precedence where earlier Immortals material conflicts. It also points to the Cyclopedia for the high-level game. These books have complementary roles; one supplies the mortal reference while the other supplies the chosen Immortal procedures.

Do not build a character from two progression systems

The revised introduction identifies changed Immortal advancement: 36 experience levels arranged in six tiers. It also changes sphere restrictions and removes the earlier limit on the number of Immortals at particular levels. Those are reasons to keep one progression framework on the character sheet.

Before importing an older Immortal, make a conversion note rather than treating its old rank as a matching new level. Record the source of each selected procedure and the version your campaign follows. Consult the full relevant chapters for the actual conversion; the introduction's list of changes is not itself a complete conversion system.

For a campaign staying with the earlier set, the decision goes the other way. Preserve that framework consistently instead of silently importing a later rule because its book happens to be newer. Your players need to know which progression and resource procedures their characters use.

A mortal campaign does not require Immortal player characters

A DM may want background for powerful patrons while the party continues ordinary adventuring. That job differs from letting players become Immortals. Decide which job you are preparing before asking everyone to read an entire additional rules framework.

For a patron, write the information the adventure actually needs: its goal, the agent acting for it and the condition under which it intervenes. Keep DM-only secrets separate from clues the party can discover. If the scenario calls for a particular Immortal ability, check that procedure in your selected rules source rather than inventing it from the patron's title.

Separate adopting the rules from adopting the campaign's history

Wrath of the Immortals combines rules with campaign material. Owning the package does not oblige a home campaign to reproduce every published event. Choose the revised rules because they fit your intended game, then decide independently whether to run the accompanying campaign.

When mixing adventure sources, make a short timeline note for each one: events assumed already happened, important NPCs available and factions still operating. This is preparation advice, not a claim that the books contain an automatic timeline conversion.

For high-level mortal adventures, use the separate CM and M module preparation guide. That article addresses domain play and high-level procedures before an Immortal-character campaign begins.
