Encyclopedia Magica: Partial Sets, Volume Four and the Global Index

Editorial date: ยท TSR Archive

Volume Four indexes all four Magica books at printed page 1597. Distinguish the earlier Magic Encyclopedia locator and check which volume holds your item.

Encyclopedia Magica is a four-volume item reference, and Volume Four holds the index for the entire series. A lone volume can answer questions about the items it contains, but it is not the whole reference. Before buying a partial set, establish which item you need and whether its entry is in an included volume. Also distinguish the earlier Magic Encyclopedia. Its product descriptions emphasize concise listings with source and page references. It is a different publication from the four-volume Encyclopedia Magica. Similar names can hide a large difference in what you receive.

The fourth volume's published contents point to the index at page 1597. That is the series' printed page numbering, not a claim that this individual volume has 1,597 pages. Use the printed page number when following the reference, and verify how a digital viewer numbers its file pages.

Magic Encyclopedia is a source locator

The Magic Encyclopedia Volume One, TSR 9293, is recorded as a 64-page book from 1992. Volume Two, TSR 9421, is a 96-page book from 1993. Their descriptions say the listings identify the product and page where the item is described, alongside experience and sale values.

If your job is to locate an original item's source, that cross-reference role may be exactly what you need. If you want to read the actual item entry at the table, confirm that the offered reference contains it rather than only pointing to another book. Ask for a contents page and a representative entry when the listing shortens the title to "Magic Encyclopedia."

Build a small campaign list from a large reference

Start with the treasure required by the adventure you are preparing. Find the named entry and read its full effect. Note the conditions that can matter during play: activation, limited uses, duration and any restriction on the user. The collection does not require a campaign to adopt every item.

Then choose which version your table will use if the adventure or another reference supplies different wording. Keep the source title and printed page beside the item in the DM's notes. A player's short description can omit undiscovered properties without making your own rules reference ambiguous.

Do not assign a treasure simply because its name resembles a familiar modern item. Review its mechanics against the edition being played. A source compilation is a place to find material; inclusion alone is not proof of balance for your party or compatibility with a later edition.

What does a missing volume prevent?

For one known entry, the immediate question is whether its volume is present. For searching the whole collection by name, Volume Four's global index has a separate role. A partial set may therefore be useful for a narrow job while remaining inconvenient for broad browsing.

Ask a seller to photograph each full volume title and its publication page. A mixed-printing set is not automatically unusable, but the dates in the table do not certify every production detail. If matching printings matter to your collection, use the TSR identification workflow to record the evidence for each copy.

Sources and scope

The archive records establish the volume identities and the earlier Encyclopedia's locator role. Volume Four's contents and index page are visible in the licensed preview. This guide does not certify exhaustive item coverage, reproduce the index or supply a balance review of every entry.
