B1-9 In Search of Adventure: Missing Handouts and Optional GAZ1
Editorial date: ยท TSR Archive
Printed pages 3-4 make GAZ1 optional and describe removable rear sheets. Check B1-9 maps, handouts and campaign connections before preparing a used copy.
B1-9 In Search of Adventure is a connected anthology, not a promise of nine complete standalone modules. Its introduction describes material reorganized for a continuing campaign and says that an original module can supply material not reproduced in full. Before preparing a used copy, check the removable map and handout section at the back. You do not need GAZ1 to start the published adventures. The introduction makes that gazetteer optional. You do need the relevant Basic rules and the maps for the adventure you choose. A copy missing its rear sheets therefore creates a more immediate preparation problem than a shelf missing the gazetteer.
The purchase checks that matter for play
| Item | Role | Check before the first session |
|---|---|---|
| B1-9, TSR 9190 | A 160-page campaign anthology. | The chosen adventure, connecting interludes and its map references are present. |
| Map and handout section | Adventure maps, regional and town maps, plus player handouts. | Rear sheets may have been removed along their perforations. Ask whether they remain bound or are supplied loose. |
| D&D Basic player and DM rules | The rules references named by the introduction. | Your character sheets and combat procedures match the rules you will use. |
| GAZ1, The Grand Duchy of Karameikos | Optional additional campaign background. | Useful for extending the setting; not a prerequisite imposed by B1-9's introduction. |
| An original B-series module | Optional expansion of material selected for the anthology. | Compare locations and names before adding an omitted section. |
Check the rear sheets with the adventure in front of you
Printed page 4 explains that maps and handouts are gathered at the back and designed for removal. The adventure text supplies their page references. A gap near the rear binding may mean sheets were removed as intended, rather than pages accidentally torn out during reading. Either way, you need to establish where those sheets are now.
Ask a seller to show the rear section and any loose sheets together. Then take the adventure you plan to run and follow each of its map references. A photograph of a pile of paper does not show whether the particular dungeon map is present. Check readable location numbers and any handout the text expects players to receive.
For a digital copy, follow the same references on screen. Verify that the needed sheets are included and legible at the size you will print. The original paper product's removable construction does not tell you how a particular scan or modern reprint handles those pages.
Use the campaign connections before importing missing material
The introduction points the DM to the Adventure Flow Chart and the local descriptions before play. These connections are part of the anthology's purpose. Read the interlude that brings the party into your selected adventure and the passage that handles its consequences.
If you also own the standalone version, decide what you want to add. An extra dungeon area may need a route into it. A restored starting location may compete with Threshold's role as the anthology's base. Keep the anthology's chosen names and geography in one set of notes so that players do not receive two inconsistent explanations.
Owning B2, The Keep on the Borderlands, is therefore a different choice from owning the Caves-related material in a connected compilation. Check the standalone adventure when your campaign specifically needs its original structure. Do not use the B1-9 label as evidence that every piece of B2 accompanies the anthology.
Decide whether you need GAZ1 after choosing the campaign's reach
A focused opening adventure needs its immediate surroundings and the clues that lead into it. Broader questions about neighboring settlements or regional politics can make a gazetteer more useful later. Add the book for that stated job rather than treating it as a hidden admission fee.
If you use a different Basic-derived rules system, review its character and encounter assumptions separately. Our Mystara Gazetteer guide for OSE explains the distinction between borrowing setting material and adopting a regional rules option.
Sources and scope
The licensed B1-9 preview, printed pages 3-4, supplies the anthology, prerequisite and removable-sheet statements. The archive card provides its product identity and format. This checklist does not enumerate every omission from B1-B9 or certify the completeness of a current reprint.
