Alternity's Several Starting Points: Fast-Play, Core Books and the 1999 Box
Editorial date: ยท TSR Archive
The archive records 1997 preview material, two 1998 hardcovers and a 1999 starter. Match player and referee resources without confusing their scope.
Alternity has several introductory-looking publications. The archive records 1997 Fast-Play material, a limited preview hardcover, two full core books in 1998 and a boxed Science Fiction Adventure Game in 1999. They are different entry routes. Decide whether you want a preview, a continuing rules reference or a package of ready-to-use play aids before assembling a reading list.

Fast-Play covers are opposite-side records
The Player's Handbook Fast-Play record and Rulemaster Guide Fast-Play record each list a 20-page book dated 1997. Each links to the other as its flip-side. That is a reason to inspect the physical arrangement, not to assume the two archive pages prove that a complete package contains two independently loose booklets. Check both covers and the order of the material in the copy you have. For a scan, inspect the page sequence rather than judging completeness from the first cover alone. A player-facing introduction and a referee-facing introduction have separate information jobs even when they are physically joined.
The separate limited preview Player's Handbook, TSR 2800L, is a 256-page hardcover cataloged as signed and numbered, with a stated limit of 2,600. A 1997 date therefore does not identify Fast-Play by itself. The preview hardcover and the shorter introductory material have different formats and different catalog identities.
Player and referee work in the full books
| Product | Recorded identity | Publisher-described role |
|---|---|---|
| Player's Handbook | 2800. 1998. 256-page hardcover. | Hero creation and play, equipment and optional character systems. |
| Gamemaster Guide | 2801. 1998. 256-page hardcover. | Moderating play, creating adventures, starships and star systems. |
| Science Fiction Adventure Game | 11510. 1999. Two 32-page books and loose play aids. | A packaged introduction with hero folders, screen and dice. |
Both full hardcovers advertise a Fast-Play chapter. The familiar phrase therefore does not identify just the 1997 item. The Gamemaster Guide's description also promises a starting adventure and an index covering both core books. When a page reference crosses volumes, put the book title beside it in your session notes.
The 1999 box is an inventory of its own
The boxed record lists a two-panel screen, eight bi-fold accessory sheets, a Read This First insert and five dice, as well as the two books. It additionally records the dice packaging and a vinyl TSR dice bag. The publisher's shorter description calls the accessory sheets hero folders.
For a used set, identify each booklet and folder before substituting core hardcover material. A full reference book may explain the larger game without recreating the introductory sequence or the particular characters the box puts in front of beginners. Conversely, an intact starter does not establish that it includes every optional subsystem advertised for the full books.
Choose one introductory route for the first session. Read its player material and referee material together far enough to see where they meet, while keeping referee revelations separate. Add a fuller rule when the campaign needs it and the group agrees to use that reference.
The Gamma World 2000 discussion concerns a later campaign book's relationship to Alternity. That compatibility question is distinct from identifying which introductory Alternity package you own.
Sources and scope
Dates, extents and product roles come from the linked archive records. The flip-side relationship is preserved explicitly. No full rule comparison or assertion that two separate Fast-Play booklets must exist in a complete copy is made.
