Which Al-Qadim Books Do You Need to Run Each Adventure?
ยท TSR Archive
Official introductions separate required books from extras for Caravans, Reunion and A Dozen and One Adventures. Land of Fate is optional in all three.
Land of Fate is not a universal prerequisite for Al-Qadim adventures. The introductions to Caravans, Reunion and A Dozen and One Adventures explicitly distinguish it from the books they require. Start with the adventure's own requirements, then add setting references for the campaign you intend to run.
Requirements verified in three introductions
The table follows the printed introductory text. "Required" means the adventure says it assumes or needs access to the book. "Optional" preserves the text's helpful, recommended or unnecessary status. It does not mean the book has no value.
| Adventure | Required or assumed | Explicitly optional | Primary evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| A Dozen and One Adventures ALQ3, TSR 9432 | PHB, DMG, MC1 and MC2, Arabian Adventures | Land of Fate; Al-Qadim Monstrous Compendium appendix | Campaign Guide, printed page 4 |
| Caravans TSR 9459 | PHB, DMG, Monstrous Manual or MC1 and MC2, Arabian Adventures | Land of Fate; Al-Qadim Monstrous Compendium appendix | Campaign Guide, printed page 4 |
| Reunion TSR 9584 | PHB, DMG, Arabian Adventures | Land of Fate; Al-Qadim Monstrous Compendium appendix | Introduction, printed page 2 |
Reunion does not list a general monster book in that requirements paragraph.
It says relevant encounter statistics have been provided. That is a difference in the stated minimum; it is not a recommendation to discard the campaign's existing monster reference.
ALQ3 predates the Monstrous Manual and names the two core Compendiums. Caravans explicitly accepts the hardcover as an alternative. If using the Manual for an older adventure, retain the adventure's own monster entries and check any disputed references. The Manual-versus-Compendium comparison explains the limit of treating the books as identical.
Arabian Adventures and Land of Fate do different work
Arabian Adventures supplies the Al-Qadim rules and character material. Land of Fate expands the setting reference and provides its own maps and other components. A campaign can use both, but a particular adventure may supply the places and statistics needed for its own scenario. The official ALQ3 introduction explains why the extra setting and monster books are optional: pertinent material is included in its Campaign Guide. This is a useful test for a purchase. If the adventure already supplies the immediate location and opponents, buy an additional reference to support a wider campaign rather than to unlock a supposedly unplayable module.
Caravans applies the same required-versus-helpful distinction while supplying an Adventure Book and Campaign Guide. Make sure you have both of those adventure components. Owning optional Land of Fate material does not replace a missing booklet from the adventure itself.
How to check adventures outside this table
The Al-Qadim catalog includes more adventures than these three. Their requirements have not all been verified here. Do not copy the Caravans row across the entire line.
- Read the introduction's "What You Need" or equivalent section. Record the exact required and recommended wording beside each title.
- Check the component list. A book, map card and monster insert supplied inside the adventure are part of that adventure, even if a seller has separated them.
- Read references in the scenario you plan to run. Note spells or creatures sent to another book, and distinguish them from background reading.
- Choose a specific adventure before assembling the supplementary library. For a longer campaign, add material when the party's likely travels extend beyond what the adventure describes.
Golden Voyages illustrates the wording problem. Its publisher description recommends Arabian Adventures. That description alone does not establish the full minimum library in its introduction. A recommendation on the box and a complete dependency inventory are different evidence.
Check the adventure's aids before replacing books
For ALQ3, the Campaign Guide describes the poster map and six card sheets and explains that player and DM maps can appear on different cards. Count those components when inspecting a used set. A collection of rulebooks cannot recreate a missing adventure handout merely by covering the same setting.
If you own Arabian Adventures and the AD&D core, the table tells you which additional references these three introductions actually demand. Keep the module's supplied material with it, and reserve a separate list for optional campaign reading.
Sources and scope
The three linked official preview PDFs contain the primary requirements passages. Archive cards identify the products and original contents. This is a verified three-adventure comparison, with a checking procedure for the rest of the line.
