A1 and Scourge of the Slavelords: A Compilation Is Another Campaign Choice

Editorial date: ยท TSR Archive

Nine tournament characters belong to A1. The later collection advertises revised adventures and a separate map book; compare the campaign entry points.

Slave Pits of the Undercity and Scourge of the Slavelords offer different entry points into related material. Original A1 is a complete adventure with a tournament apparatus. The later A1-4 collection advertises a revised campaign and additional scenarios. Buy or prepare the version that serves the campaign you intend to run, rather than treating the larger book as a photographic replacement for the smaller one.

A1 carries its event machinery with it

The TSR 9039 record identifies David Cook's A1 as a 1980 publication, a 24-page book with cover. Its publisher description names GenCon XIII as the original tournament venue and lists a scoring system with nine pre-rolled, playtested characters. It also calls A1 complete in itself while identifying A2, A3 and A4 as companion adventures. In his 2009 interview, Lawrence Schick distinguished tournament scenarios from published modules and named the original A1-4 series as material written for a large tournament. That recollection concerns the four-adventure series. It should not be read as saying that the 1986 collected book was the physical product used at the earlier event.

The nine characters are especially useful evidence of purpose. They provide a defined starting group for the supplied competition, not a requirement that every home party contain exactly nine players. If you use existing characters, compare their available abilities with the challenges you plan to run. Keep any adjustment in your campaign notes rather than silently rewriting a tournament score comparison.

The 1986 book advertises revision

A1, TSR 90391980. 24-page book with cover.Read its own tournament notes and supplied characters.

The collection's description explicitly promises a completely revised series, with new challenges and scenarios covering the Wild Coast, Highport, the Pomarj and the Drachensgrab Mountains. Its advertised campaign connection begins with Temple of Elemental Evil and leads characters from seventh level to eleventh and beyond. That is a description of a campaign route, not a complete audit of every book dependency.

Choose one text as the authority for the current session. If you borrow a location from another version, annotate the borrowed reference with its product code. Otherwise, a map number from A1 and an encounter assumption from the revised collection can look like a contradiction in a single adventure when they actually came from different publications.

Write an entry note before joining adventures

A useful entry note records why this party is investigating the raids, what it knows about its destination and how the chosen adventure expects it to arrive. These are three separate questions even when the answers fit on one sheet. The original description supplies an opposition to confront. Your ongoing campaign supplies the characters' immediate reasons to act.

For a used A1-4 copy, verify the map book independently of the main binding. For original A1, check that the cover material referenced by your copy is accessible. A readable narrative is not the whole preparation package. The stock-number guide explains why the adventure code and product number should travel together in a seller's description.

Sources and scope

Formats and campaign promises come from the linked archive records. Schick's interview supplies the attributed tournament-design context. This is a version-selection guide, not a room-by-room comparison of all four original modules with the collected revision.
